How To Perform Self Ruqyah

A complete step by step guide based on the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet peace be upon him

Most people have never been properly taught how to perform self Ruqyah. They either overcomplicate it, making it far harder than Allah intended, or they approach it without understanding what they are actually doing or why.

“Indeed, we have heard a wondrous Qur’an. It guides to the right way, so we have believed in it.”
Surah Al-Jinn · 72:1–2

Allah Alone Heals

The Quran does not heal by itself. The reciter does not heal. The water does not heal. The oil does not heal. Allah is the One who grants shifa. Everything else is a means that He has permitted and blessed. Approach every session with this certainty in your heart.

وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ

And when I am ill it is He who heals me. Surah Ash Shu'ara verse 80

Reactions Are Not The Goal

One of the most common mistakes is treating Ruqyah like a test. People recite once or twice, notice no reaction, and conclude they have no problem. Or they experience a reaction and immediately conclude they have possession or Sihr. Neither is correct.Reactions during Ruqyah, yawning, crying, feeling heavy, emotional release, are signs the treatment is working. They are not the target. The target is healing. Focus on consistency and trust in Allah, not on symptoms and reactions.

Consistency Is Everything

The people who see the most benefit from self Ruqyah are almost always those who are consistent over weeks and months, not days. The strongest results come from simple daily actions repeated consistently rather than long complicated sessions done occasionally. Ibn Al Qayyim said: The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are small. This applies to Ruqyah more than almost anything else.

The Foundation Comes Before The Steps.

Before the steps, there are three things you must understand. They are the foundation without which the steps alone will not benefit you fully.

Relying On Others Instead Of Yourself

Many people jump from raqi to raqi looking for someone to fix them. The Prophet peace be upon him taught us to recite Ruqyah on ourselves. The most successful cases seen over many years of practice are usually people who became consistent with self Ruqyah and stopped depending on others. You have everything you need. Start using it.

Neglecting Salah While Focusing On Ruqyah

Some people listen to hours of Ruqyah audio every day while being careless with their five daily prayers. This is a fundamental error. The foundation is Tawheed, Salah, and obedience to Allah. Ruqyah is not a replacement for that foundation. It is built on top of it. Without Salah the treatment is significantly weakened.

Constantly Changing Your Routine

One day a different reciter. The next day a different method. Then a different treatment. Then starting again from scratch. This produces no results. Choose a programme and stay with it long enough to see what it does. Consistency with one approach is far more powerful than trying everything at once.

Becoming Obsessed With Symptoms

Every twitch, every dream, every headache becomes a sign. More time is spent analysing symptoms than reciting Quran. This leads to fear and waswas rather than healing. Recite. Trust Allah. And let Him do what only He can do.

Keep the routine simple and focused.

Prepare Yourself

Make wudu if possible. Wudu is not a condition for Ruqyah but it is strongly recommended. The Prophet peace be upon him loved to be in a state of purity when engaging with the words of Allah.Choose a quiet clean private space where you will not be interrupted. Turn off all notifications. Remove all distractions. If you have Ruqyah water prepared, place it in front of you. If you have olive oil or black seed oil prepared, have it nearby.

Make Your Intention

Before you begin sit quietly for a moment. Make a sincere intention in your heart that you are performing this Ruqyah seeking cure from Allah alone. Not from the recitation itself. Not from any person. From Allah. You may make dua before starting. Ask Allah to grant you shifa, to accept your recitation, and to place His healing in what you are about to do.

Place Your Hand On The Affected Area

Place your right hand on your head, or on the area of your body where you feel pain, heaviness, or discomfort. This is directly from the Sunnah of the Prophet peace be upon him.He would place his hand on the affected area when performing Ruqyah. Reported in Sahih Bukhari 5750.

Begin The Recitation

Recite the following in order. Recite each passage clearly, with presence of mind and heart, and with certainty that the words of Allah are reaching every part of your body.

Surah Al Fatiha — Recite seven times.
Ayatul Kursi : Surah Al Baqarah verse 255 — Recite three times.
Last Two Verses Of Surah Al Baqarah : Verses 285 and 286 — Recite three times.
Surah Al Ikhlas — Recite three times.
Surah Al Falaq — Recite three times.
Surah An Nas — Recite three times.
The two together, Al Falaq and An Nas, form the most complete protection available in the Quran.

Add The Sihr Verses When Needed

If your self check result indicated a Sihr pattern, or if you suspect Sihr may be involved, add the following after the core recitation above:

Surah Al Araf verses 117 to 122.
Surah Yunus verses 79 to 82.
Surah Taha verses 65 to 70.
These three passages are specifically cited by Ibn Al Qayyim and Sheikh Wahid Abdussalam Bali as the core Quranic arsenal against Sihr. Recite each three to seven times.

Blow Into Your Hands And Wipe Over Your Body

After each passage or at the end of the full recitation, cup your hands together, blow gently into them, and wipe over your face, head, chest, and as much of your body as you can reach. Do this three times. This is directly from the Sunnah of the Prophet peace be upon him. Aisha radiAllahu anha reported that when the Prophet peace be upon him was ill he would recite the Muawwidhatayn, blow into his hands, and wipe over his body. Reported in Sahih Bukhari 5017.

Recite Over Water And Drink

If you have a bottle of water prepared, recite Surah Al Fatiha, Ayatul Kursi, and the three Quls over it, blowing into the water after each recitation. Drink a full glass immediately after the session. Continue drinking from this water throughout the day.Ruqyah water used internally alongside external application is one of the most consistently effective aspects of the treatment programme.

Apply Ruqyah Oil

If you have Ruqyah olive oil or black seed oil prepared, apply it to your head, chest, stomach, back, and any area of pain or heaviness after the session. This combines the internal treatment of the recited water with external application to the affected areas.

8 Steps, Clearly Separated.

Each step is presented as its own visual block for easy reading, especially on mobile.

What To Do If Symptoms Increase

Symptoms sometimes worsen during or after Ruqyah especially in the early weeks of treatment. This is documented and expected by the scholars including Ibn Al Qayyim in Zad Al Maad. It is a sign the treatment is reaching the affliction. Continue without stopping.

If physical reactions during the session become very intense, sit or lie down, continue reciting softly, and make dua to Allah. Do not panic. Do not stop the recitation. Panic strengthens what you are trying to weaken.

If you feel nausea during recitation this is particularly common with eaten Sihr. Allow it to pass. Continue reciting. Ibn Al Qayyim describes this as the Ruqyah reaching the location of the affliction.

What To Do If Nothing Happens

Nothing happening during a Ruqyah session does not mean you have no problem. And it does not mean the treatment is not working. Many genuine cases produce no dramatic reactions during Ruqyah. The healing still occurs. The protection still builds. The words of Allah are never wasted. Every recitation is counted by Allah regardless of whether you can feel its effect.Continue consistently. Do not judge the treatment by reactions. Judge it by your state over weeks and months. By your sleep. Your motivation. Your worship. Your peace.
