Understanding Sihr & Black Magic

What it is, how it works, the most commonly discussed forms, possible signs, and the truth about treatment through the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah.

Sihr is real — but it should not become an explanation for everything.Ixaslam teaches acknowledgement without obsession, treatment without hopelessness, and complete reliance upon Allah.

Surah Al-Baqarah · 2:102

“And they do not harm anyone through it except by the permission of Allah.”

WHAT IS SIHR?

Real, Serious And Still Under Allah’s Decree.

Sihr is magic. In Islamic sources it is described as a real practice involving specific actions and words, and in some descriptions the involvement of jinn or shayateen by the permission of Allah. The balanced position is important: acknowledging Sihr does not mean seeing it everywhere. Many hardships have ordinary causes, and no person can be harmed through Sihr independently of Allah.

وَمَا هُم بِضَارِّينَ بِهِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ

“And they do not harm anyone through it except by the permission of Allah.” — Al-Baqarah 2:102

That principle is central. Sihr may be described as a cause, but Allah remains above every cause, and what He permits He can also remove.

WHY IT IS CONDEMNED

A Practice That Carries Grave Spiritual Consequences.

Islamic scholarship treats Sihr as a grave and prohibited matter. The Qur’an describes people learning what harms them and warns about its consequences in the Hereafter.

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمُوا لَمَنِ اشْتَرَاهُ مَا لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَاقٍ

“And they knew that whoever purchased it would have no share in the Hereafter.” — Al-Baqarah 2:102

The lesson is not simply fear of magic. It is also a warning about the spiritual cost of pursuing forbidden practices and looking for power through disobedience.

Sihr of Separation

Often called Sihr al-Tafreeq, this is described in relation to separation between people who share a close bond, particularly spouses.A couple may experience sudden conflict, emotional distance, or a sense that something has changed without understanding why. Marriage problems still require honest communication, counselling, and practical effort.

Sihr of Obstruction

Often called Sihr al-Rabt in this context, it is described as persistent blockage in areas such as marriage, work, studies, business, or progress. The emphasis is on a perceived pattern of repeated setbacks. Ordinary life can also contain long periods of difficulty, so patterns should be considered carefully.

Eaten or Drunk Sihr

This is traditionally described as Sihr placed in food or drink and then consumed. Spiritual-healing accounts may describe stomach-related reactions during Ruqyah.Physical symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, or vomiting can also have many medical causes and should not be attributed automatically to Sihr.

POSSIBLE INDICATORS

Signs that may be considered never proof on their own.

A single symptom does not establish Sihr. Consider the wider circumstances and keep other spiritual, medical, psychological, and practical explanations in view.

وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ

“And from the evil of the envier when he envies.” — Surah Al-Falaq, 113:5

01: Sudden relationship change

Especially between spouses, when the change appears sharply and without an obvious trigger.

02: Persistent blockage in a specific area

Repeated difficulty despite genuine effort may feel significant, but real-world causes still matter.

03: Physical reactions during Ruqyah

Some people report reactions during recitation. Such responses are not a standalone confirmation.

04: Disturbing or recurring dreams

Physical symptoms may appear alongside other changes. Persistent symptoms should be medically assessed.

05: Strong reactions to Qur’anic recitation

Some people report pronounced responses while listening to passages during Ruqyah.

06: Problems beginning at a distinct point

A sudden onset can be worth examining carefully alongside practical and health-related factors.

07: Unusual objects connected to a suspected practice

Alarming objects may raise questions, but conclusions should not be drawn without sound evidence.

08: Persistent issues across several areas of life

Long-running difficulties can feel connected, but multiple areas of difficulty do not automatically indicate Sihr.

Not every problem is Sihr

Marriage difficulties may come from poor communication, unresolved conflict, stress, finances, or lack of effort. Financial difficulty can have ordinary causes. Low mood may be linked to anxiety, depression, burnout, sleep problems, or other health factors. The danger of attributing everything to Sihr is that needed practical or professional help may be delayed.

Do not become obsessed with who did it

Some people become consumed by identifying a suspected practitioner, accuse innocent relatives, or cut off relationships without reliable evidence. Islam does not require revenge or detective work. Your responsibility is to turn to Allah, pursue legitimate treatment, and leave the unseen to Him.

Sihr is not unbeatable

Fear can become its own burden. Islam teaches that Allah has power over every cause, and the believer should not treat Sihr as an unstoppable force. Consistent worship, Qur’an, adhkar, tawbah, and lawful treatment remain central.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَيُبْطِلُهُ

“Indeed, Allah will make it worthless.”
Surah Yunus 10:81. The Qur’anic message is one of certainty in Allah’s power, not hopelessness in the face of affliction.

Not might. Will. The strongest Sihr ever performed is worthless before the power of Allah. The people who experienced the fastest and most complete recoveries were not the ones who had the most dramatic Ruqyah sessions. They were the ones who became most consistent with salah, adhkar, Quran, and sincere tawbah. They turned to Allah and trusted Him completely. And He delivered.

Three Major Misconceptions About Sihr.

The most protective approach is often the most balanced one: neither denial nor obsession.

TREATMENT

The Treatment Begins With Turning To Allah.

Ruqyah is approached through Qur’anic recitation, authentic supplication, worship, and lawful means not through forbidden practices or dependence on magicians.

Qur’anic Ruqyah

Recitation from the Qur’an and authentic supplications is central to spiritual treatment.

Consistency, not panic

Keep salah, adhkar, Qur’an, and sincere tawbah as part of an ongoing routine.

Ruqyah water and lawful methods

Traditional Ruqyah practices may include recitation over water or other lawful methods used by qualified practitioners.

Sidr and traditional supportive practices

Some Ruqyah traditions discuss Sidr baths and oils as supportive practices alongside Qur’anic treatment

Appropriate professional care

Persistent physical or psychological symptoms should also be assessed by appropriate medical or mental-health professionals.

Assess your situation with calm, knowledge, and tawakkul.

The purpose of a Ruqyah self-check is not to create fear. It is to help you reflect on patterns, understand the possibilities, and decide what kind of support may be appropriate.
